Dubai: His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in his capacity as Ruler of Dubai, on Tuesday issued Decree No. 49 of 2013 setting up the World Expo 2020 Preparatory Committee.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council, will oversee the duties of the committee, which will be chaired by Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates airline and Group.

Mohammad Ebrahim Al Shaibani, Director of the Dubai Ruler’s Court, will serve as Vice-Chairman. Other board members include Reem Ebrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State, Major General Khamis Matter Al Mazeina, Dubai Police Chief, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director General of Dubai Municipality, Mattar Mohammad Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Roads and Transport Authority, Khalifa Suhail Al Zafein, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, and Hilal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai World Trade Centre.

The committee is tasked with putting place the strategic plan to regulate its own operations and prepare for World Expo 2020 activities. The committee will evaluate the feasibility of the emirate’s current infrastructure and tourism, health care, road and transportation facilities for World Expo 2020. It will also assess the needs and requirements of establishments and preparations, as well as technical, tourism and economic requirements for the event’s activities. The committee will coordinate with public and private sector bodies in the UAE and abroad in all fields pertaining to World Expo 2020.

The committee is tasked with determining the programmes, exhibitions and activities that will be organised alongside World Expo 2020, and will oversee efforts to market and promote the event locally, regionally and internationally to ensure its success. The committee will also oversee all promotional activities carried out by specialised companies. It will regularly forward reports to Shaikh Mohammad to review the committee’s operations, achievements and recommendations to ensure the event’s success.

The decree emphasises the importance of full cooperation from all governmental bodies, authorities and councils with the committee in order to achieve its objectives.

The decree includes an article which annuls Decree No. 2 of 2012 pertaining to setting up the Higher Committee for Hosting World Expo 2020. The decree also annuls any other articles or laws that might contradict with its bylaws.

The decree comes into effect from the date of its issuance and is to be published in the official gazette.
