The proposed spinoff of the long-running CBS hit How I Met Your Mother has taken another step closer to appearing on TV screens next autumn. The network has ordered up a pilot for the series, titled How I Met Your Dad.

According to Deadline, CBS has green-lighted the pilot from How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, as well as Up All Night creator Emily Spivey. The series wouldn’t follow any of the characters from How I Met Your Mother, instead following a new group of characters. The only direct link between the two shows would be the bar where all the main characters hang out, MacLaren’s.

How I Met Your Mother has taken nine seasons to tell the story of how Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) met the mother of his children. The new series would follow a female character on a similar journey to find love.

The appearance of How I Met Your Dad could fill the void in the CBS lineup left by How I Met Your Mother, which is coming to a close in May. The series has performed well in the ratings and its final season has been a bit of an experiment, with all the episodes taking place in the weekend leading up the wedding of Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders).

The ordering of a pilot doesn’t guarantee that How I Met Your Dad will go to series, but it’s a step.
