A Dubai production of famed Irish playwright Martin McDonagh’s comedy, The Cripple of Inishmaan is coming to Ductac from March 4-7 in the run-up to the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. Put together by Danu Theatre, the Broadway play starring Daniel Radcliffe was described as an “uproariously funny, dark comedy”.

Set in 1934 on the remote island of Inishmaan, off the west coast of Ireland, news filters through to the sparse collection of dysfunctional and excitement-starved islanders that an American film crew are visiting the neighbouring island of Inishmore — and Billy Claven is determined to audition for the chance to go to Hollywood, no matter what.

“McDonagh embraces the great Irish tradition of rich storytelling in this masterpiece, seamlessly weaving sentimentality and savagery into an inherent Gaelic charm — a modern day JM Synge,” said producer Padraig Downey, the founder of Danu and director of the theatre group’s past three productions.

While Radcliffe will not be in the Dubai cast, it has an equally talented line-up: Fernando Alarcon Lisci, a 17-year-old student at Dubai American Academy, will play the title role of Billy Claven.

The Cripple of Inishmaan runs for six performances at Ductac Mall of the Emirates, from March 4-7 at 7.30pm, with matinee performances at 3pm on Friday, March 6, and Saturday, March 7. Tickets are Dh85 and Dh55 and available at ductac.org.
