Art Dubai: Paint me a picture
With performance and visual art, forums and awards on the agenda, Art Dubai 2012 is offering a feast of everything creative

Taking place at Madinat Jumeirah from March 21-24 for the sixth time since starting in 2007, the fair’s website claims that this year’s event will offer a slew of fresh, contemporary artwork, quirky creative performances and a chance to mingle with the who’s who of the art world.
With an assortment of 75 galleries from 32 countries taking part – including New York’s Marianne Boesky Gallery, Athr Gallery from Jeddah and Dubai’s The Third Line gallery – it’s easy to see how Art Dubai has positioned itself as one of the biggest players in the lucrative and highly competitive world of art.
Part of Art Week – an umbrella initiative that includes the Sikka Art Fair and Design Days Dubai – this year’s Art Dubai event is set to include not only visual art, but also feature site-specific work as part of the not-for-profit programme Art Dubai Projects which features over 40 international and UAE-based artists.
The well-known Global Art Forum will also take place, looking at the Arab world over the past year and honing in on fundamental events that fall under the topic ‘media’. Entitled ‘The Medium of Media’, the six-day forum is expected to attract a large audience. The DXB Store, showcasing a variety of local designer’s works, as well as the Abraaj Capital Art Prize that rewards proposals celebrating the culture and heritage of the region, will also be present at Art Dubai.
The fair has also launched a residency programme in collaboration with the Delfina Foundation, Tashkeel and Dubai Culture with international artists Faycal Bagriche, Magdi Mostafa and Deniz Uster taking part and creating site-specific works for the fair.
The programme also features UAE-based artists Hadeyah Badri, Zeinab Al Hashimi and Nasir Nasrallah who will be exhibiting as part of an Open Studios exhibition during the SIKKA Art Fair in Bastakiya.
