Grammy Award-winner Sean Paul says he hopes his first gig in Abu Dhabi will be one of his most memorable.

“A concert which really sticks in my mind is The Prince’s Trust in London,” he told Gulf News ahead of his headline show at Beats on the Beach on Thursday night.

“It was for 100,000 fans and the people at the front were jumping at a different time to people at the back, because they were hearing it at different times. The sheer volume of people made it very memorable. But Abu Dhabi will be up there with the best. I’m sure.

“It’s a truly wonderful place and I am blessed to be here,” said the singer who was dressed in a checked shirt and jeans and sporting an impressive Mohawk haircut.

“It’s so exciting and the F1 line-up is impressive. Kelis has new work, which I’d love to see and Kanye West is in town, and I’ve never seen him live. I’ve seen him in the studios and at video shoots. I’d really like to see that too.

And he admitted he’s a fan of Kelly Rowland too. “Kelly Rowland is beautiful and she already did her thing and I missed it so I’m disappointed about that one.”

Ahead of his debut performance in the capital, Paul said he was “jacked” about getting up on stage at Yasalam’s Beats on the Beach.

“I do what I do. My shows are full of energy and I love it when people give me that energy back. I’ve been to this side of the earth before where people are giving me a lot of energy while I’m on stage.”

The Kingston-born dancehall superstar caught the world’s attention in 2002 with his breakout hit, ‘Gimme the Light’ and his level of fame has continued to rise ever since. Paul has sold more than 10 million albums worldwide, and is currently working on a new one.

“I’m trying to get it out by early next year. The path I’m on musically is exciting and I can’t wait to share it with my fans.

"In this business, they say you're only as good as your last hit," he said. "I have to prove myself all over again every time you come back. So here I come…”
