Andrew E.'s recent concert at Chi@The Lodge yet again underscored the Filipino rap king's strong following in Dubai. It was Andrew E.'s (E stands for his surname, Espiritu) third concert in the emirate.

"I'm really proud and honoured to perform before the Filipino community here in Dubai," Andrew E. told tabloid! after his show.

"I find the Dubai crowd very loud and enthusiastic. I'm really happy every time I perform here."

The feisty entertainer rocked the crowd with his novelty rap songs such as Banyo Queen, which he dedicated to his fans. The fans, in turn, were very enthusiastic throughout the show.

Monster hit

Andrew E. rose to fame when he took a job as a DJ at Euphoria, a popular club in Manila. His recording career started in December 1990 with the release of his first single, Humanap Ka Ng Panget (Look For Someone Ugly), which was a monster hit. The combination of his catchy storytelling rap style, irresistible beats and often hilarious lyrics made him a popular and unique figure on the Philippine pop scene.

Andrew E.'s career branched out as he began to star in comedy films, which were based on his songs. He has starred in at least 28 blockbuster films.

In the mid-'90s, Andrew E. also founded Dongalo Wreckords to find fresh Filipino rap talent. One popular rap group that got started through his record company is Salbakuta — whose song Stupid Luv became a hit and was made into a popular movie, which starred Andrew E.

Despite his success, Andrew E. says he remains grounded, which he believes is important to overcome the immense pressure and challenges of the showbiz industry.

"I have my own way of handling any hurdle in my career," he says.

Andrew E. has largely contributed to the growth and popularity of the Filipino rap scene by introducing a freestyle battle competition, which has given aspiring rappers a shot at record deals.

The rapper recently released his new album, Clubzilla, which was also promoted during his Dubai gig.

He also encouraged aspiring rap artists in the UAE to pursue their dreams.
