Katy Perry’s new album Prism will go head-to-head with Lady Gaga’s new album Artpop
Here’s a second Prism that’s going to be omnipresent in your media-consumption life this autumn. No, it’s not the NSA data-mining program; it’s Katy Perry’s new album, due out on October 22.
The pop vixen announced the new album – her long-awaited follow-up to the 2010 smash Teenage Dream – in classic fashion. She rented a gargantuan gold truck emblazoned with the album details and drove it all over Los Angeles on Monday, as pop peer Adam Lambert excitedly noted.
It’s the first stop on what looks to be a tour for the gilded trailer, Perry’s first hint at new music after releasing the 3D concert film Part of Me. “Find the #PRISM semi, take a picture and I’ll RT you,” she tweeted. “Don’t worry, Los Angeles is just the first stop on the map.”
An early look at the production credits suggest she’s not veering too far from the team that made Teenage Dream such a singles juggernaut, with five No 1 tracks. In April, she said that Max Martin, Dr. Luke and Greg Wells all make appearances.
The album will come just a few week’s before Lady Gaga’s also-awaited comeback Artpop, due out on November 11. It should be an interesting parallel to the Kanye/Jay Z/Drake album wars of the summer: Do today’s fans prefer Perry’s master-crafted confections or Gaga’s neo-Warholian concept-pop?
