Dubai: Janet Jackson and Metallica will perform in the UAE next month, Gulf News can confirm, and the US rock band are already “extremely excited”.

US rockers Metallica will perform in the capital on October 25, as exclusively revealed by Gulf News on Monday night. Just hours later the music legends released a message for their fans in the Middle East.

“After 30 years of travel to all corners of the earth, this one is extra special,” the band posted on the official Metallica website.

“The show kicks off a week of new territories for us as this show will be followed by two nights in India. “We’re continuing to find firsts in 2011 and we are extremely excited to announce that we will be playing in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates next month,” they wrote.

Yas Island show weekend

The band will perform as part of the Yas Island Show Weekend series. An industry source close to the deal said the band was booked to meet a growing a demand for heavy metal and rock music in the UAE.

Jackson will open the new season of Yas Island Show Weekends, at Yas Arena on October 13, Flash Entertainment said in a statement on Monday, with Jackson has chosing Abu Dhabi to join the 35 international cities on her Number Ones, Up Close and Personal tour.

Michael Jackson

Jackson, sister of the late Michael Jackson and a musical legend in her own right, with more than 100 million record sales and a well-known wardrobe malfunction to her name, said this tour would differ from her previous concert schedules in that she would only perform music exclusively from her chart-topping album Number Ones.

“These concerts will be different from anything I have ever done,” she said of the tour. “I will be as up close and personal as possible. These concerts are not about special effects."

“The music will all be songs that you’ve made number one for me,” she added.

Metallica's legacy

Metallica’s legacy speaks for itself, having sold more than 100 million records worldwide, achieved gold or platinum album status in 40 countries and scooped seven Grammy Awards.

Since its launch in 2010, Yas Island Show Weekends have entertained more than 150,000 spectators, with acts including Nelly Furtado, Guns N’ Roses, The Jonas Brothers and Stevie Wonder.

A spokesperson for Flash said the Jackson concert will be the first in a series of surprise announcements to come.
