Fork lightening, driving rain and fantastic music and showmanship set Coldplay's debut gig in Abu Dhabi among one of the UAE's most memorable to date.

So it won't come as a surprise to hear their second UAE show, a New Year's Eve bash,  is expected to sell out in record time.

This time their role is two-fold. Not only will the seven-time Grammy Award-winning band have the honour of ushering in a brand new year but the lads will also kick-start the UAE capital's historic hosting of the 2011/12 Volvo Ocean Race, a gruelling round-the-world yacht race, widely regarded as the ‘Everest of Sailing'.

Having last played to 20,000 fans in Abu Dhabi in 2009, the British band is relishing a return to the UAE capital to play for their tens of thousands of fans from across the region and beyond.

Presented by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA), and brought to the capital by FLASH Entertainment, Coldplay will perform live on December 31 at a unique venue adjacent to the purpose-built Volvo Ocean Race Destination Village on the Corniche Breakwater.

From December 31-January 14 the venue, which is a big as eight football pitches, will host the six-strong Volvo Ocean Race fleet, its sea-hardened sailors and more than 100,000 fans.

Songs from the latest album Mylo Xyloto, which debuted at number one in 30 countries worldwide and smashed the record for the highest number of download sales in one week, will feature heavily as well as all the favourites from over the years.

Further acts will follow the giant performance from January 1-14 and details, including Coldplay ticket prices, will be announced shortly.
