Just days ago, she secured her position as Britain's most successful musical export when she returned from the US with armfuls of Grammys.

And last night, Adele triumphed back in her hometown as she picked up more gongs at the Brit Awards.

The 23-year-old collected two accolades at the O2 Arena in Greenwich.

She beat Coldplay and Florence and The Machine to win the prestigious Best British Album category for her record 21. The album is due to sell its 20 millionth copy within the next month, making it one of the biggest selling records of all time.

She also scooped the Best British Female award, seeing off rivals including Kate Bush, Jessie J and Laura Marling.

It was an apt homecoming for the singer, who became the first recipient of the Critics Choice award at the Brits in 2008 when she was still trying to make a name for herself.

Adele, who is dating entrepreneur Simon Konecki, 37, is now on track to become the most successful British female musical artist of all time.

She picked up six Grammy awards in the US last week — and as the accolades roll in, it seems she is starting to enjoy the fruits of her success.

She has swapped her flat in West Norwood, South East London, for a 10-bedroom, Grade II listed mansion in leafy West Sussex.

Her new boyfriend, meanwhile, lives just half an hour away in Brighton, East Sussex. At last night's ceremony, the couple shared a table with EastEnders actor Sid Owen, his fiancee Polly Parsons and comedian Alan Carr. Owen and Konecki are said to be good friends after the actor became involved with Konecki's charity work.

Also present was a burly bodyguard shadowing Adele's every move, reflecting her increasing public profile.

But there was no sign of her mother, Penny Adkins, 43, who had been expected to make a rare public appearance alongside her daughter.

At the Grammys, Adele had paid tribute to her mother, who brought her up single-handedly after her father left when she was four.

The singer showed off a slimmer figure in her black custom-made Burberry dress last night, looking noticeably more slender than she had at the ceremony four years ago.

However, last week she insisted she has no interest in becoming a "skinny minnie", adding: "I've never seen magazine covers and music videos and thought I need to look like that. To sell more records? I don't even need to — I'm selling records!

"I don't find that attractive and even if I did have, you know, a Sports Illustrated body, I'd still wear elegant clothes. Exploiting yourself sexually is not a good look, I don't think.'

21 is Adele's second album and the follow-up to her debut album 19, which has sold 6.5 million copies.

The other major winner at last night's event was former choir boy Ed Sheeran.

Also dressed in Burberry, the singer opted for a blue suit and blue trainers — after his mother insisted he make an effort for the occasion.

The 21-year-old saw off stars including former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher to be named Best British Male. He also won the award for British Breakthrough Act.

He travelled to Los Angeles to pursue his dream of a music career and started to attract fans on the internet. Last summer he finally released his first studio album, which made it to No 1.

After all that effort, the star, who is usually teetotal, was determined to let his hair down after the Brits, saying: "I'll try to find a pub and break my ban on drinking. I like Adnams [a famous Suffolk beverage]. But I'm not a big fan of parties."

Meanwhile, Coldplay, fronted by Gwyneth Paltrow's husband Chris Martin, took the Best British Group gong, beating rivals including Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian and Elbow.

Comedian James Corden, who hosted the event, was briefly lost for words during the live broadcast when a man wandered casually in front of him while he was talking to the camera. After an awkward pause, Corden quickly recovered his composure, telling the stranger: "All right mate. Just at work at the moment."

Nominees were given last-minute styling tips at a backstage spa, where they could have their spray tans topped up and their nails painted.

Performers dined on filled croissants, Caesar salads, hot dogs and the traditional British dish of sausage and mash in the plush backstage lounge. Their private bar was also lined with red velvet carpets lit up with green, red and yellow lights.

Celebrations continued late into the night at a circus-themed party, complete with a giant toy elephant and a full-size helter-skelter slide, while Rihanna used her trip to the Brits to round off her 72-hour birthday celebrations.

ED SHEERAN

(Winner: Best Male Solo Artist, Best Breakthrough Act)

Teetotal, middle-class singer-songwriter, 21. Shy, modest and always dresses in hoodie and jeans. Started writing songs aged 11. Has taken him five years to hit the big time and he spent several years living on friends' sofas.

Musical style: Accomplished guitarist with a folk-ish tinge.

Big break: Dropped out of school at 16 and played at open mic events all around the country. Built up his fan base by posting music online.

Fascinating fact: He has become friends with Sir Elton John, and has a management deal with the singer's company Rocket.

What's next: He is going to try to break America and Japan, and will be supporting the band Snow Patrol on their US tour from March to May.

EMELI SANDE

(Winner: Critics Choice Award)

Real name is Adele Emily Sande, but she changed it in 2010 to avoid confusion with Adele.

The 24-year-old is instantly recognisable with her platinum quiff and mohican. Raised in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, was four years into a degree in medicine when she dropped out to pursue a career in music.

Musical style: Leona Lewis with oomph.

Big break: While vacuuming her bedroom she wrote the melody for a song called Diamond Rings, which she gave to the controversial British rapper Chipmunk. It was a top ten hit and EMI signed her up as a songwriter.

Fascinating fact: She has written songs for Cheryl Cole, Cher Lloyd, Leona Lewis and Susan Boyle.

What's next: Currently supporting Coldplay on their European tour.

LANA DEL RAY

(Nominated: International Breakthrough Act)

Plain old Elizabeth Grant, 25, has become the hottest singer in America thanks to a carefully put-together marketing campaign. Tried releasing music as Lizzy Grant in 2009, but the album sank without a trace. However, after being made-over and rebranded as a "bad girl" she has made it big. Her father, Robert, is a millionaire, but Del Rey denies that he has ever bankrolled her success.

Musical style: Distinctively off-key vocals, with a sense of theatrical performance.

Big break: The low-budget video for the song Video Games was viewed 20 million times after being posted online last summer. Thanks to her big hair and pillowy lips she was hyped to the hilt and her debut album Born To Die was massively anticipated.

Fascinating fact: Her label, Interscope, hired a clutch of songwriters to help create the retro sound.

What's next: She is planning a small tour of intimate venues in America in October.

BRUNO MARS

(Nominated: Best International Male)

Born Peter Gene Hernandez into a showbiz family in Honolulu, Hawaii. At 17 he moved to Los Angeles and was signed to Motown Records, but had no success.

Musical style: A cross between Elvis and Michael Buble with an extra portion of cheese.

Big break: His album Doo-wops And Hooligans came out in October 2010 and featured the huge hits Grenade, Just The Way You Are and Marry You.

Fascinating fact: He was arrested in Las Vegas for cocaine possession in 2010 after a bathroom attendant at the Hard Rock Hotel reported that someone was apparently taking cocaine in a stall. He pleaded guilty, paid a fine and did community service.

What's next: Has recently started work on second album. Was nominated for six Grammy awards this year, but lost out to Adele in every category.
