Matondkar, who began her journey as a child actor in Masoom, achieved fine form in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Despite not being in the spotlight for the last couple of years, her disturbed girl act in Kaun and her portrayal of a blood-thirsty lover in Ek Hasina Thi have immortalised her.
The awards night by The Indian Television Academy (ITA) is a mix of glamour and girl power. Last year, Vidya Balan and Sushmita Sen were honoured for their contribution to Indian cinema.
Women from other fields from the UAE, India, Egypt and Bahrain were also honoured for their contribution to various fields including medicine, charity and human rights. The tradition is expected to continue this year, with the names of the recipients to be revealed later.
“[This is a] platform to award women from all over the Middle East,” said Anu Ranjan, the president of ITA.
Along with decorating Bollywood stars, campaigns are held to create awareness of their women empowerment campaign Beti.
The night will also see a performance from Ash King, singer of hits Ti Amo and I Love You hits from Dum Maaro Dum and Bodyguard. Actress Gauhar Khan of Ishaqzaade fame will also hit the stage. For bookings, call 052 9196704.
