The plot: Robert Miller (Gere) has it all, a picture perfect family, a stunning mansion and a successful business, aka, he’s living the American dream. Well, that’s what everyone on the outside thinks, but the truth is that Robert is in way over his head, trapped in a deal, trying to sell his financially troubled business empire to a major bank, and hoping that his web of fraud isn’t unearthed before it all goes through. And he’s also trying to keep the lie afloat for his wife, Ellen (Sarandon), and his daughter, a brilliant businesswoman and his company heir, Brooke (Marling), as well as juggling an affair with French art-dealer Julie (Casta). And just when he thinks it’s all going to be okay, Robert causes a fatal accident and finds himself in deeper trouble than ever before.
This is a gripping thriller, and even if the ins and outs of business ethics sound snooze-inducing to you, you’ll be sucked into this muddled tale of shady morals. Plus, Richard Gere is simply brilliant in the cold, unforgiving role, are those Oscar whispers we hear?
