After the death of his parents, Windu was sent to the Jedi Order, where he was trained by Master Yoda, who taught him the knowledge and control of the Force. In combat, Windu is one of the most advanced Jedis, a skill that can be seen in the way in which he eliminated Jango Fett, a bounty hunter, in Episode II: The Attack of the Clones.
Windu is the creator of the Fight VII style, also known as Vaapad, a very dangerous style that only the most expert teachers can handle. It is characterised by the use of techniques drawing on the dark energy within a person, and thus can be difficult to control.
Windu is also distinguished by his violet lightsabre. Samuel L. Jackson requested that his character have an instantly recognisable characteristic and George Lucas allowed Windu to carry a lightsabre with an exclusive violet colour.
The death of Windu at the hands of Anakin Skywalker and Darth Sidious was one of the more tragic scenes in the series and represented a major turning point for Anakin. He betrays Windu, cutting off Windu's lightsabre arm as he attempts to kill Sidious. Darth Sidious then uses Force lightning to dispose of Windu.
This murder of a fellow Jedi marks the birth of the Empire and the moment where Anakin joins the dark side, becoming Darth Vader.
