Jar Jar Binks

Before the Lord of The Ring's Gollum and Harry Potter's Dobby the House Elf, Star Wars had its own hapless animated character, Jar Jar Binks.

Loved (and hated) by many, Jar Jar Binks is a Gungan that has great success thanks to his ignorance and indiscretion, and mostly to his luck. He was the source of so many disasters that he was exiled from the underwater city of Otoh Gunga. He joined the Jedis, who wanted to release the Naboo planet from the Trade Federation's clutches. Ironically, he managed to unite the Naboos and the Gungans and obtained peace between both civilizations.
Ten years later, Jar Jar Binks was named Representative by the Galactic Senate and held onto the title of General which he had won in the Battle of Naboo. Later Jar Jar was sent to the planet Coruscant as a representative of the Gungans for the Galactic Senate and as a replacement for Senator Padmé Amidala.
Jar Jar Binks took one of the most important decisions while in this position when he took the initiative and proposed the motion granting emergency powers to Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. This was a very important move, completely changing the future of the Galactic Republic.
Neither Jar Jar Binks, nor anyone else knew then that the Supreme Chancellor Palpatine was in fact the Lord Sith Darth Sidious.
A great sense of expectation was felt about the arrival of Jar Jar before Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released. What came later was a great controversy. Many diehard fans of Star Wars did not empathise with Jar Jar and felt that his character was planned just to attract more children.
The Expanded Universe (the story that doesn't appear in the movies) explains that Jar Jar was an orphan and was 20 years old when he was exiled from Otoh Gunga.
