He says this failure brought him face-to-face with the truth that has been widely written about, debated and shouted from every conceivable studio roof. The simple advice is: focus on the script, let your movie choose the cast and not the other way round, and, finally, let your editor do his job.
Now, on the eve of the release of his second film Tum Milo Toh Sahi, Sadanand says he drafted and re-drafted this script no less than 26 times, selected his actors with great care and allowed crisp editing. "I've understood that movie making is not a right. It is a privilege that is important and should not be misused."
Tum Milo Toh Sahi is a love story, panning across different age groups. The tale unfolds in Maya Nagari where we follow the lives of three couples. Actors Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia who play Subramaniam and Delshad, respectively, think they have found their soulmates. However, Amit (Shetty) and Anita (Malavade), look at love as meeting of the minds, while Rehan Khan's Bikramjeet and Anjana Sukhani's Shalini let romance rule their hearts.
The couples tell their stories through their meetings at the city's ancient Irani restaurant, which is about to be demolished. The threat spices up their lives, and probably gives them the extra zing to do something worthwhile. Will they win? Sadanand says the experiences of the couples are not structured episodically. It's Sadanand's honesty and the sense of authenticity that endeared Patekar to him.
He contends that the characters help underline the malaise in today's society. Each one is so caught up in his/her own life that they "have forgotten the joy of being together".
Kapadia has gone de-glam to play a 58-year-old Parsi. In the film, we see her fighting the demons from the past and ultimately coming out triumphant. As they say, love turns winter into spring.
