Tackling a strong subject of court martial, Shaurya stars a host of talented actors such as Rahul Bose and Minissha Lamba.
This may be one of the first Bollywood films to focus on a court martial. In Hollywood, such films are common. Rob Reiner's A Few Good Men is a popular fim in the genre.
Replicating a similar theme, Shaurya (Courage) stars Rahul Bose, Minissha Lamba, Javed Jaffrey, Kay Kay Menon, Deepak Dobriyal and Seema Biswas. The film is directed by Samar Khan, whose directorial debut Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye was a bitter experience.
When Javed (Dobriyal) is falsely charged with mutiny, treason and the killing of a fellow officer, Kavya (Lamba), an investigative journalist, tries to find the truth while Siddharth (Bose) and Akash (Jaffrey) are assigned to argue the case. Kay Kay Menon plays Brigadier Pratap.
Though Samar has denied that his film is a copy of A Few Good Men, there is no doubt Shaurya's storyline has an uncanny resemblance to the Hollywood flick.
One thing is for sure – with actors such as Bose, Jaffrey and Menon, Shaurya will be a dignified product – at least on the acting front. "It is about having the wisdom and the depth to live by a set of moral values," says Bose.
Dobriyal, who plays Javed, is a highly talented but under-rated actor. He played Rajju, the guy who longed to marry Dolly (Kareena Kapoor) in Omkara. Adding a bit of glamour to this flick is Lamba. Despite her natural beauty and acting potential, she hasn't yet managed to break into the commercial league.
She has done off-beat flicks such as Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., Dus Kahaniyan and now Shaurya. Lamba shrugs off such claims, saying, "Every film I do is commercially viable. Shaurya is an important film with a strong message and I am happy to be associated with it."
Shah Rukh Khan, who made a guest appearance at the end of Samar's first film, recites a poem for this one. The poetry captures the essence of the film and is called Shaurya Kya Hai. It also features on the film's soundtrack.
