For most of his life, he was a legend, one of the most remarkable Jedi Knights. But later in life, the dark side of The Force seduced him. From that point on, like his new master (Darth Sidious), this character lived two lives: one as Count Dooku, leader and founder of the army of the Confederacy of Independent Systems; and one as Darth Tyranus, a powerful Sith.

His background is very interesting. Dooku held the title of Count of Serenno (his native planet), which he resigned when he entered the Jedi Order but recovered with his departure from the Order.
He began his Jedi life as an apprentice of Yoda, before becoming Qui-Gon Jinn's master. He finally left the Jedi Order after the battle of Naboo. Dooku's Jedi philosophy was undermined by his belief that the Jedis shouldn't serve to a weak and corrupt institution like the Republic. The Jedi Council disagreed with his political ideas. His padawan, Qui-Gon Jinn, followed his example when defying the Council, often executing and taking his own decisions, but unlike Dooku, he was never seduced by the dark side of the Force.
Dooku was one of the most skilled swordsmen of the Galaxy, and specialised in the Makashi, an effective combat technique. That's why he was able to win the battle of Geonosis against Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
Count Dooku was born 102 years before the battle of Yavin and died 19 years before the battle. In Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith, Dooku observed the battle of Coruscant from the observation tower of General Grievous' ship, Invisible Hand. There he faced Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, who believed they had gone there to save Palpatine.
After defeating Obi-Wan Kenobi, Count Dooku came up against Anakin Skywalker. In the last moments of his life, just before being beheaded by Anakin (by order of Sidious), Dooku understood how his master betrayed him. Although he had trusted Sidious, Dooku was no more than a tool used to further the ends of his Sith Master.
