Singam is a typical cop-and-villain story with a pretty actress to add some interest to the plot.

Action hero Suriya plays policeman Durai Singam in Tuticorin (southern Tamil Nadu), a post that his father sets up to keep him around. Vivek, as Suriya's sidekick, injects the comic element, and Anushka, who visits her grandfather in the same city, brings the necessary elements of romance and dance to the story.

But since too much comedy or passion could put us to sleep, Hari introduces a villain who has been expelled by a court order from Chennai to Tuticorin for a few months. With the prey in the lion's den, we can now assume how Singam will progress. Suriya is no stranger to wearing a uniform, but Hari says his latest plot is very different from other cop tales.

Also, the two know each other well, having worked together in Aaru and Velu. "The best part is Suriya improves with every movie, and I was amazed at the kind of energy he exuded in Singam. The man understands how to strike a rapport with his audience and how to transport the character from the screen to the audience," says Hari.

The director, who will begin shooting his next film (which is still untitled) with Dhanush (Rajnikanth's son-in-law) and Tamannaah, adds that Anushka was willing to look less glamorous for her role in the film and recites her lines in flawless Tamil.

With Prakash Raj and Nasser completing the cast, Singam has enough substance to engage the audience.
