Honing his craft
Young superstar Aljur Abrenica believes it's time for his career to take a new direction. Ahead of his mini concert in Dubai, Abrenica tells tabloid! where he feels he can make a mark as an artist.
After Amaya, we haven't heard any news about you doing either a new TV or movie project. What is keeping you busy?
I have been doing some out of town shows, and mostly singing on Party Pilipinas. I will also be in Dubai on April 19 and 20 to perform. It's mostly that at the moment, but it's good because I really intend to polish my craft as a singer-performer, and then hopefully become an action star.
You've had your share of criticisms as an actor. How do you feel about that?
I am open to criticisms in whatever form or manner. There are those who mean well, and there are those who have nothing better to say; yet you learn from what they say. There are people who are really born into this business and they shine. I feel I have a lot to offer, but it's not been tapped yet. I am not ashamed to admit that I still have to do more work when it comes to acting, but I am working on it.
Is this the reason why you want to be more of an action star than a dramatic actor?
I need to discover [what] I am good at, and be the best in it. If that will be my forte, why not? If it will make my fans appreciate me more, then that's the way forward for my career. But I'd like to be a versatile actor someday, so hopefully I will still be given a chance to do a variety of roles.
Other GMA artists are busy with so many projects. Are you worried that you are being left out?
Not really. I have full confidence in my handlers and I've been made aware of a plan for my career, so I am happy with that.
It's not your first time in Dubai. What tourist spots have you visited and which ones do you like?
Dubai is a beautiful city. It's almost like the Philippines because everywhere I go, there's a lot of kabayans. I love the desert, and Burj Al Arab. This time I want to see Burj Khalifa and do some shopping in The Dubai Mall.

Khalil's Got Talent
Khalil Ramos may not have won the top prize in Pilipinas Got Talent last year, but he's the one most likely to have a showbiz career, with great talent and good looks.
Though he finished second, that was enough to get Ramos noticed by ABS CBN bigwigs. He was cast in The Princess and I opposite young star Kathryn Bernardo.
Besides acting, Ramos is also keen on recording an album, as singing is his first love. The talented upstart is also being considered a regular on the network's variety show ASAP, where he can hone his singing skills and perhaps pick up a new one, dancing, to make him the total package.
Break-up woes: Daniel and Heart
If their intriguing tweets were anything to go by, actress Heart Evangelista and Brazilian-Japanese actor-model Daniel Matsunaga may have just confirmed their break-up.
Evangelista (@heart021485) tweeted a series of messages last week, including: "Being single is embracing growth." Meanwhile, Matsunaga (@dmatsunaga) also tweeted and said, "Just asking God... why, I tried."
The Brapanese celeb, who has been in Manila for a few years, seemed to be the most affected. He is currently in Brazil for a family emergency, but rumours have it he left Manila a month ago because he really was nursing a broken heart.
At the time he left, both Matsunaga and Evangelista denied their relationship had ended.
Tween Hearts ends
The very popular Tween Hearts show on GMA will finally end.
The show, featuring the youngest and most promising love teams in the business, premiered in September 2010, and was supposed to run for only one season. But it was a big success and was extended several times; it even had a movie spin-off last year.
But on May 31, the journey will end for the show's millions of fans and stars, especially Barbie Forteza and Joshua Dionisio, whose love team blossomed during the show.
According to network insiders, the primary reason for the show getting the axe is its director, award-winning actress Gina Alajar, who will be leaving the network for TV5.
Kyla's not pregnant yet
R&B singing sensation Kyla denied news that she is pregnant with her first baby by Rich Alavarez, a basketball superstar.
Kyla did, however, reveal she and Alavarez have been trying since their marriage in November.
The singer hopes she will finally be able to conceive after their trip to Europe this summer. She said she will proudly announce once she's pregnant.
