Wedding bells for Samvritha

Malayalam actor Samvritha Sunil is gearing up for the biggest moment of her life. On November 1, the pretty actress will be tying the knot with Akhil, a software engineer, based in California.

A week prior to the wedding, we called her up wondering if she would be available for an interview and much to our surprise, the Diamond Necklace actor without any fuss agreed to a chat.

In her eight-year career, Samvritha has acted in 40 Malayalam films, besides Uyir, in Tamil and Evadaithe Naakenti, in Telegu. If Minnaminnikootam, earned her the Asianet Supporting Actress award, two years later she walked up the dais to collect Asianet’s Character Actress Award for Cocktail. In 2011, she received Asianet’s Popular Heroine award.

Among this year’s releases, her performance in Diamond Necklace earned her praise. Her last release was Ayalum Njanum Thammil.

How does it feel quitting films?

“I started my career with Lal Jose’s film, Rasikan, and wrapped it up with his film, Ayalum Njanum Thammil. That was quite an emotional moment for me. Otherwise on Lalettan’s sets, it is more like being at home. The journey has been good. For the time being I am taking a break from films. I don’t know about the future. My family has always supported me and now Akhil and my in-laws are supportive too.

What does Akhil say about your films?

Akhil is not a movie buff. The only film of mine that he has watched is Cocktail.

Tell us about your role in your next release, 101 Weddings.

I have worked earlier with Shafi in Cocktail. In this film, I play Abirami, a bold and smart girl. She is a social activist and works for the betterment of people. This is the first time I have been paired opposite Kunchako Boban.

How did films happen?

Actually films were never on my mind. I was an easy-going girl, with no particular career dreams as such. Director Ranjith who is a family friend suggested my name to Lal Jose when he was looking for a new face for Rasikan. After my first film, I was not very keen on continuing, but six or seven films later, I fell seriously in love with my work.

A role that is close to your heart?

That would be Maya, from Diamond Necklace. Another character that I loved playing is Kalpana from Shyamprasad’s Arike. She is a vibrant and naughty girl. A lot of mental preparation went into it. Besides it was the first time I did sound recording live. It was a new experience for me.
