Sophiya Haque dies in London
Former VJ and actress Haque succumbed to cancer on Wednesday
“It’s true. We just heard the news. She died peacefully in her sleep last night. She had cancer,” said Oliver Thomson from Cole Kitchenn Personal Management Ltd. He added that her family was in London and that funeral arrangements will be made towards the end of the week.
Haque, 41, was born to an English mother and a Bangladeshi father, rose to prominence as the chirpy, free-spirited VJ for Indian music channel V in the 1990s and later dabbled in Bollywood by appearing in films such as Snip and Khoobsurat. Finding little success in the industry, she moved back to London to pursue her theatre dreams. She was last seen in the theatre production Privates on Parade, in which she played the only female amongst a group of soldiers at the end of the Second World War.
Celebrities such as actor-director Pooja Bhatt took to twitter to express her sadness. Bhatt wrote, “Tragic news about Sophiya Haque. One of the most gorgeous women to have walked this planet... Shine on where-ever it is you now are luv...”,.
Former VJ and wife of Arshad Warsi Maria Goretti knew Haque during their VJ days. “So completely heartbreaking … Just heard shocking news rip sophia haque ....”. Director Ken Ghosh also expressed his condolences on twitter with “Just heard sad news of the passing away of the live wire ex VJ of channel V, Sophia Haque.”
