Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife Gauri are now parents of a baby boy, according to Indian media reports on Wednesday. The baby was born on May 27 via a surrogate mother.

While the star has never publicly spoken about the baby, an official from the Mumbai civic body BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) told the Indian Express on Wednesday that they have received a birth certificate which carries the name of the couple as parents of the child.

The baby weighed 1.5kgs and was born at 34 weeks of pregnancy, the official added.

The usually unreserved Khan has, however, been tight-lipped about the planned birth and why he and his wife would choose this route. He and Gauri already have a 15-year-old son, Aryan, and 13-year-old daughter, Suhana.

The news has also caused controversy after it was alleged that Khan and his wife knew about the sex of the child before the birth. Sex determination tests are illegal in India.

Rumours about the surrogate mother’s identity have also been widely discussed, with many speculating that it is Gauri’s sister-in-law Namita Chibber.

Authorities have said they will investigate sex-determination allegations.

“We are now in the process of establishing whether [the baby] is the biological child of the star couple. Once that is established, we shall ask them details of the sonography etc, to find out whether they did find out the child’s gender before birth,” the BMC official told the Indian Express.

Khan is currently promoting his latest movie ‘Chennai Express’, which releases on Eid in the UAE.
