Former Disney star and singer Selena Gomez guarantees that her first performance in the UAE will be a night filled with fantastic dancing. The 21-year-old singer will take to the Dubai Music Week stage on Friday at the World Trade Centre.

“It’s going to be fun. I want everyone to be exhausted from the dancing. That will be the moment when I can feel alive and be who I am. My [fan] following is from five-year-olds to the end of thirty. It’s the funnest group of people,” said Gomez at a press conference in Dubai on Thursday.

The Come & Get It singer, who has just finished the European leg of her Stars Dance World Tour, is one of the prime attractions of the six-day music event, which will also will.i.am and Timbaland perform on Thursday night. Like every star who steps onto the UAE soil, the gracious Gomez is also soaking up the sunshine.

“I might not want to go home. We feel so blessed because we wake up everyday and we get to see the beach,” said Gomez.

The former girlfriend of Justin Bieber is currently riding high on her hit solo album Stars Dance and has been nominated for best female singer in the upcoming MTV EMAs, to be held in Amsterdam in November. She expressed her excitement at being on the “other side” of action.

“It’s so cool. I watched all these awards growing up and I have gone to them for a couple of years. But now to be on the other side and to watch some of my favourite artists that I have loved and admired. It feels great to be in such a position,” said Gomez. The Texas native is the quintessential Disney discovery who found fame with TV series Wizards of Waverley Place and went on to make movies and music.

She hasn’t let fame or success get to her head, a feat that many Disney stars such as Lindsay Lohan or Britney Spears haven’t quite mastered.

When asked if her transition from child star to an international star was difficult, she described herself as a kid who was still trying to figure out her place.

“I genuinely appreciate the path I have taken. But honestly, when you experience the places I have been to and have [people] tell me what to do and what not to do — you get this feeling whether you are trapped or free or experiencing life too much. But it’s a part of growing up,” said Gomez.
