Los Angeles: Katy Perry took home the MTV Video Music Awards' biggest trophy, video of the year, for her inspirational video "Firework," but Sunday's ceremony will be remembered for Beyonce's baby news.

Beyonce rubbed her swollen belly after performing, confirming to millions of viewers that she and husband Jay-Z were expecting their first child. She actually announced the news on the black carpet before the show began, instantly upstaging all that was to come during the festivities.

Among the show's highlights was a tribute to the late Amy Winehouse, a stirring performance by Adele, and a high-flying act by Chris Brown.

Other winners included Britney Spears, who took best Pop Music Video for "Till the World Ends". Rock video went to Foo Fighters for "Walk” and Hip-hop video for Nicki Minaj’s "Super Bass”

Perry was the top nominee of the night with 10 and came away with three. Adele also won three – editing, cinematography and art direction.
