Inception and Shutter Island see DiCaprio named the highest-paid actor of the past year

For the first time ever, Leonardo DiCaprio has claimed the top spot in Forbes’ annual list of the highest paid actor’s in Hollywood, knocking Johnny Depp off the coveted number one position.

Thanks to his mega-hits Inception and Shutter Island, Leo has seen his asking price per movie break through the Dh90 million barrier, and his fame stock rise thanks to a public dalliance with hottie-of-the-moment, Blake Lively.

1. Leonardo DiCaprio
2010 earnings: Dh277 million

Up four places from his position at number five last year, Leo saw Inception become a critical and commercial success, and he’s been busy creating buzz for his upcoming project, the Clint Eastwood-directed J. Edgar.

2. Johnny Depp
2010 earnings: Dh180 million

Down one position from last year, Johnny starred in the second biggest box office success of the year, Alice In Wonderland, which took Dh3.6 billion at the box office. But his fourth turn as Captain Jack Sparrow won’t be included until next year’s list.

3. Adam Sandler
2010 earnings: Dh144 million

His films tend to fail with critics, but strike a chord with worldwide audiences, and Adam saw his comedy movie Grown Ups (which he also wrote) rake in almost a billion dirhams at the international box office.

4. Will Smith
2010 earnings: Dh130 million

Having put his own career on the back burner for a while to launch his kids’, Willow and Jayden, careers, behind the scenes, Will produced Jayden’s hit, The Karate Kid and scored a hefty paycheque for Men in Black III.

5. Tom Hanks
2010 earnings: Dh126 million

Tom made it onto the list thanks to his return as the voice of cowboy Woody in the box office success, Toy Story 3, which became the highest-grossing animation of all time.
