Bollywood actress and activist Shabana Azmi will perform in family comedy drama Happy Birthday Sunita to Ductac, Mall Of The Emirates from November 27 to 29.

The play will take you into the world of British Punjabi family the Johals, who are celebrating one its members’ 40th birthday. But like any large family, beneath the veneer of normality there are tensions simmering.

The actors will speak in a mixture of Hindi, Punjabi and English.

Azmi, who has acted in over 100 films and won several awards, plays Tejal, the matriarch of the Johal house.

Happy Birthday Sunita is a heartwarming comedy about a British Punjabi family, and I feel will resonate strongly amongst Dubai’s large and growing South Asian and theatre community,” said Pravesh Kumar, artistic director of Rifco, the theatre company bringing the play to Dubai.

Happy Birthday Sunita is written by actress Harvey Virdi, whose film credits include Brick Lane, Bend It Like Beckham and Thunderbirds, and is created by Kumar and Virdi. Tickets cost Dh200, Dh250, Dh300 and Dh350. On November 27, there’s an 8pm show, and on the next two days there are a 3pm show and an 8pm show. For details, contact box.office@ductac.org
