Rajesh Pratap Singh, whose collection at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week paid tribute to the weavers of denim industry, feels that Indians are not good with creating denim outfits.
His Spring/Summer 2015 collection, titled ‘Blue Blood’, launched khadi denim, which is made with natural fabrics.
“My inspiration is indigo. We have been working for this collection from few years now. This is what it has come down to and we finished the collection this afternoon.
“Denims are one of the most polluted fabrics and here in India we don’t know how to make it. But if we make raw and pure denim it’s fantastic,” the designer said.
The show saw a group of weavers sitting on the ramp while models walked on it showcasing his collection. Even an elderly weaver walked the runway, which had an audio-visual presentation of creation of these naturally-woven denims running on the screens.
“Those were my colleagues from my factory. They were wearing my creations,” he said.
The unique selling point of Singh’s creation was his last piece from the collection — the steel-woven denim.
“It’s actually a very old technique. I have done metals before in my collection but this is the first time I have used steel in this form. It had very light indigo silk on the weft and stainless steel on the warp,” he said.
Female models wore baggy shirts and pants with short boots and the designer said it was a conscious styling.
“I feel too-fitted is something which is not so cool. My fabric was natural indigo. Most of it is hand spun and hand-woven. It’s Khadi as you know. Fitted styles won’t have worked with this fabric,” he added.
The collection also celebrated the purity of denim as well as its versatility.
