BLACK SEA

Two-time Academy Award nominee Jude Law is a submarine captain that takes his misfit crew on a search for sunken treasure. It doesn’t take long for these sailors to figure out that fewer crew members means larger shares of the loot…if you catch my drift. Think The Italian Job meets The Hunt for Red October.

BLACKHAT

Move over Guardians of Peace there’s a new hacker in town and his name is Thor…kind of. Chris Hemsworth plays a convicted hacker who gets a day pass from prison to help the FBI and Chinese Government investigate a cyber-attack. Their search uncovers a network of high-level cyber-criminals with a sinister motive.

BIRDMAN

It’s finally here! Possibly the most talked-about movie since Leo turned crazy broker in Wolf of Wall Street, Birdman! Michael Keaton is back to his best in this multi-award winning and nominated cracker of a film.

It’s like he’s playing his own life, a bit of a washed-up action hero movie actor who needs a new direction, so he teams up with best friend Brandon (Zach Galifianakis) and gets his own play on Broadway. Where Keaton was Batman (the original and the best some might say) Riggan Thomson was Birdman and it seems he can’t get away from his Birdman character.

Some stunning camera work in this film by Emmanuel Lubezki (Oscar winner of Cinematography last year for Gravity) which really engrosses you, as does the score which is more like background noise…constant drumming (watch it, it’s not as weird as it seems!)

A lot of famous faces (Emma Stone, Ed Norton, Naomi Watts) and nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Screenplay and Keaton for Best Actor, and then receiving nine (joint most for the ceremony with The Grand Budapest Hotel) at the Oscars seriously ask yourself why you’re NOT seeing this film this weekend.

SELMA

With more snubs than Jennifer Aniston, Selma at last reaches the UAE. The historical drama crazily missed out on the big nominations at the Oscars but did do well at the Golden Globes by winning Best Original song for the gorgeous Glory — this is a definite Saturday evening filler.

The film is based on the Selma to Montgomery marches that took place in 1965 led by, of course, Martin Luther King and with Oprah as your producer you know there will be tears before bedtime.
