Rebel Wilson, the Australian actor known for uproariously deadpan roles in Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids, could take one of the roles in the upcoming all-female Ghostbusters film.

She told US TV host Matt Lauer that she’d met with director Paul Feig, who directed her in Bridesmaids. “I have had a meeting, but who knows?” she said. “They have to look at the script when it’s finished.” She admitted that “I’d do [Ghostbusters] for free. I probably shouldn’t say that live on TV.”

Feig announced in October that he would be directing the film, writing on Twitter: “It’s official. I’m making a new Ghostbusters & writing it with @katiedippold & yes, it will star hilarious women. That’s who I’m gonna call.” He and Dippold previously created the hit comedy The Heat, starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy.

The original Ghostbusters centred around a quartet of freelance paranormal investigators, fighting off spectral antagonists in New York — it was a huge success, becoming the second-highest grossing film of 1984. Gillian Anderson is among the actors who have lobbied for a role in the new film. She wrote on Reddit: “Paul Feig, cast me now! Start a Twitter petition! I’m free!!!!! I’m free I’m free and I’m funny, goddamnit!”

Wilson meanwhile can next be seen in the new instalment of Night at the Museum, and then in the sequel to Pitch Perfect. She also recently completed filming on Grimsby, Sacha Baron Cohen’s new film about a spy having to team up with his football hooligan brother.
