So what have celebrities and the rest of the world been up to in the run up and during the 87th Academy Awards in Los Angeles?
On Oscars day, the memorable moments that registered the most tweets per minute were:
1. @LadyGaga performs, is joined by Julie Andrews
Pop star Lady Gaga turned up on stage wearing a flowing white gown and was surrounded by a string opera sitting between rows of pine trees (the only thing missing was a brook) and had given a moving medley of songs from The Sound of Music before introducing the original star of the movie, Julie Andrews. Gaga got a standing ovation for her performance and a warm hug from Andrews.
2. Alejandro Inarritu wins Best Picture for Birdman
Before Inarritu accepted the golden statue for his directorial work in Birdman, presenter Sean Penn quipped, "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?". It seemed the joke did not go down well with most Mexicans, and Inarritu later said it was a joke between longtime friends. Birdman took home the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Original Screenplay.
3. @PattyArquette’s acceptance speech for winning Best Supporting Actress
Boyhood actress Patricia Arquette got a standing ovation from fellow nominee Meryl Streep after her speech on women's equality. "To every woman who gave birth, to every tax payer and citizen of this nation, we have fought for everybody else's equal rights. It is our time to have wage equality once and for all, and equal rights for women in the United States of America," Arquette said as she read out her speech.
Her win was the lone trophy for Boyhood.
The celebs who got the most mention on Twitter were @LadyGaga, @PattyArquette and @JohnLegend, while the three films that got the most mentions were Birdman, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Boyhood. Take a look at this heat map showing how the Oscars conversation unfolded across the world
And here's what celebrities were tweeting
"Just left #OSCARS rehearsals. Not a big deal. Relax." Yup. That was a tweet from Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who will be singing Lost Stars, which has been nominated for Best Original Song.
And look who else has been busy practicing backstage for the Oscars...
Sure, everyone wants to bring home that golden statuette but they just have to wait. "Lookie NO TOUCHIE #Oscars," Lady Gaga tweeted.
Is Oscar host Neil Patrick Harris ready for the big day or what? This is going to be his first time to host the Oscars and he has said he is ready to do "circus things". Anyway, it's hard to say whether the actor and comedian was feeling modest or just had a bout of temporary amnesia when he posted a photo of this giant billboard with his face on it. "Hey, I know that dude!" he tweeted.
Meanwhile, producer Neil Meron spent his day hanging out with Good Morning America host Robin Roberts, whose presence he said made the Oscars red carpet "even more magical".
