Feel like it’s 1939 all over again from next week as Gone With The Wind releases in UAE cinemas.

Vox Cinemas is celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Hollywood film, which picked up eight Academy Awards and is the highest-earning film in the US to date, with a gross of $1.6 billion (Dh5.8 billion).

Celebrations are also taking place in the United States, with re-releases, books and special edition DVDs.

The nearly four-hour film, which stars Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, will be screened every Monday and Wednesday for four weeks starting from December 22.

Based on Margaret Mitchell’s 1936 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, there has been criticism of the film’s racial stereotypes, with the slaves in the film shown as being happy, and Hattie McDaniel’s Mammy a welcome member of the family and loyal servant. That contrasts with this year’s Oscar-winner 12 Years A Slave, which depicts the horrific realities of slavery in the United States.

Screenings take place at Mall of the Emirates, Mirdif City Centre and Mercato Mall in Dubai, and Yas Mall in Abu Dhabi (December 22, 24, 29, 31 and January 5, 7, 12 and 14) at 7.30pm. The four-hour film will have a 10-minute intermission.
