New York: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were married Saturday in Chateau Miraval, France, says a spokesman for the couple.

Jolie, 39, and Pitt, 50, — who have dated for nine years — wed Saturday in a small chapel in a private ceremony attended by family and friends. In advance of the nondenominational civil ceremony, Pitt and Jolie also obtained a marriage license from a local California judge. The judge also conducted the ceremony in France.

The couple’s six children took part in the wedding. Jolie walked the aisle with her eldest sons Maddox, 13, and Pax, 11. Daughters Zahara, 9, and Vivienne, 6, threw petals. Shiloh, 8, and Knox, 6 served as ring bearers, the spokesman says.

Earlier this year, Jolie had told People Magazine that she and Pitt were “not really in a rush” to get married, adding: “We’re just waiting for it to be the right time with the kids, with work, when it feels right.”

The world’s media had, nonetheless, been on tenterhooks awaiting the nuptials. The A-list couple fell in love on the set of 2005 action film “Mr & Mrs Smith” - spawning the media phenomenon of “Brangelina” that has dominated celebrity journalism and the tabloids ever since.

As for how the wedding looked, Jolie has said she and Pitt were involving the kids. “It’s going to be Disney or paintball - one or the other!”

Things might be clearer on what they toasted with: The couple put their names to a rose wine from their organic thousand-acre Provence estate earlier this year; a white and red are also to be produced from grapes grown on Chateau Miraval. They’re working with winemaker Marc Perrin. “If you knew Brad and Angelina, you would see they are in search of perfection in everything,” Perrin told Bloomberg. “They’re thinking long term.”

It’s the second marriage for Pitt, who split from Jennifer Aniston in 2005, after he became close to Jolie on the set of their film Mr and Mrs Smith. It is the third marriage for Jolie, who was previously wed to British actor Jonny Lee Miller ((1996-1999) and American actor Billy Bob Thornton (2000-2003).

Jolie famously wore rubber trousers and a white t-shirt on which she has written Miller’s name in her own blood to her first wedding.

In recent years her style has become more classic, and she favours the likes of Giorgio Armani and Versace. She caused a storm at the 2013 Oscars when she wore a black gown with a high slit by Atelier Versace.

There are no details available at the time of writing as to what she wore to her wedding to Pitt, however.

Jolie — who revealed last year that she had had a double mastectomy to reduce her high risk of breast cancer — took home an Oscar for best supporting actress for her portrayal of a rebellious woman in a mental institution in 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted.”

She has played everything from a fairy tale villain (“Maleficent”) to a sexy video game heroine (“Lara Croft: Tomb Raider”) to the widow of assassinated American journalist Daniel Pearl (“A Mighty Heart”).

Pitt got his big break more than 20 years ago with a much-talked-about shirtless eye-candy role in the hit movie “Thelma and Louise” - as the two-bit thief who seduces Geena Davis.

He has received three Oscar nominations for his acting, and this year took home an Academy Award as one of the producers of best picture “12 Years a Slave”.

Of her life with Pitt and children, Jolie told People in May: “We’ve been through so much, we’ve gotten a lot closer, which I think naturally happens with raising a family together.”

“You have this person you live with who really knows you, and you know them so well. You’re not lovers or boyfriend and girlfriend as much as you are a family,” she added.
