LONDON: Eight lines have broken many hearts.

Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch has announced his engagement to theatre director Sophie Hunter, making the news public with a minuscule eight-line announcement in The Times newspaper in London.

Under “Forthcoming Marriages” was the following announcement: “Mr B. T. Cumberbatch and Miss S. I. Hunter... The engagement is announced between Benedict, the son of Wanda and Timothy Cumberbatch of London, and Sophie, daughter of Katharine Hunter of Edinburgh and Charles Hunter of London”.

Cumberbatch recently spoke of his desire to leave a legacy of a family.

“I can imagine I’ll look back at this point in my life and think: ‘Wow that was really extraordinary,’ but at the same time I hope I’m looking back and going, ‘Oh, that was the moment I got on with life and realised things beyond myself.’

“Without using words like ‘marriage’, ‘children’ and ‘family’ — although I have just used those words — put it this way, I hope I’ve got other people to look back with me at that point. I hope I’m surrounded by family.”

The announcement comes only weeks after another eligible bachelor tied the knot. Hollywood star George Clooney married human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin.

The 38-year-old actor known for his modern-day portrayal of the British sleuth is being praised for his role as code-breaking genius Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. Turing’s work cracking of German codes helped win World War II, but he was later prosecuted for homosexuality and committed suicide.

Hunter is known for avant-garde plays and studied theatre in Paris and New York.
