Kim Chiu got emotional over allegations her recent triumph, winning Best Drama Actress for TV at the recent Star Awards for Television, was a fluke.
It was her sterling performance in the TV series on ABS CBN Ikaw Lamang that got the judges’ nod. But the public has vilified the actress (and indirectly her handlers at her home studio) for having bought the award. She may have been good in the series, but for them, not good enough to beat the likes of Maricel Soriano, Bea Alonzo, Angel Locsin and Dawn Zulueta.
Congratulations on your win. How do you feel?
I feel blessed. I am very thankful to everyone who made this happen. It is a wonderful blessing and makes me inspired as an artist. The series, Ikaw Lamang, was such a pleasure to do, and was a great learning experience. It really helped me to hone my craft, and I am so grateful that my performance there was recognised.
Let us get straight to the point. There were allegations that you bought the award. What is your reaction to this?
It is very sad, very heart-breaking. I categorically deny any involvement in any scam or vote-buying. The awards have an independent panel of judges. If I wanted just an award I could have bought one many years ago, when I was new in the business. Surely, an award will be a big boost for my career. But no, I worked hard for this. I know that we cannot please everybody.
You are aware of the negative comments on social media. What do you say to your critics?
It is very painful, because it’s harsh. I have been in the industry long enough to have at least honed my craft. Modesty aside, I believe I have talent, otherwise I would not have lasted this long and I would not be given projects. Ikaw Lamang was already my eighth TV series, and the first time for which I won an award. It’s been a long, difficult process — all the sweat, hard work and the tears.
Your message to your supporters and haters?
To all those who continue to support me, thank you. You have been and will continue to be my source of strength. You have been with me through thick and thin and I thank you immensely for that. I share with you this award, which means so much to me.
To all my haters, all I can do is for them to be an inspiration for me to do better at what I do.
