Cate’s diamond-laced Oscar outfit cost £10.9m

For the red carpet, it’s obligatory to look like a million dollars.

But to match Cate Blanchett’s outfit at this year’s Oscars ceremony, let’s just say you might have to have several million more in the bank.

The combined cost of the award- winning actress’s gown and diamonds came in at a whopping £10.9 million (Dh66.6 million), it emerged on Sunday.

It made it the most expensive outfit to grace the red carpet at this month’s Academy Awards in LA. Her embellished nude dress was from the Armani Prive Fall 2013 Collection and cost an estimated £60,000, according to Vogue.

But it was the jewellery — all of which was on loan from luxury accessories supplier Chopard — that pushed her outfit’s cost into the stratosphere.

Blanchett, who picked up a best actress gong for her role in Blue Jasmine, wore dramatic earrings which had 62 opals set in white gold.

They were accompanied by a brown diamond bracelet and a pear-shaped diamond ring, bringing the total cost of her jewellery to above £10.8 million.

Her choice of gems may have been a nod to her Australian roots, as both opals and brown diamonds are commonly mined in her home country.

Charlize Theron, who was not nominated for an Oscar this year, took second place in the most expensive fashion category. The Monster actress wore more than £9 million worth of Harry Winston jewellery, along with a £55,000 Christian Dior dress.

Chopard also helped best actor winner Matthew McConaughey with his outfit — which included an extra-thin LUC XP Tonneau watch in 18-carat white gold.

The 150-year-old Swiss company considers itself a ‘lucky charm’ to Oscar winners, with its jewels worn by at least one winner from the major five categories for the past 11 years.

Blanchett seems to wear Chopard to almost every major awards event — and showed off 72-diamond earrings at the Golden Globes and a white gold and diamond necklace at the Baftas.
