Mohammed Assaf has made it to the final 10 in the running to be named Worldwide Act at the 2014 MTV EMAs, meaning he’s going up against the likes of One Direction.

Assaf, from Gaza, saw off competition from India’s Yo Yo Honey Singh and South African band Sauti Sol to win the Middle East India Africa segment of the contest. The EMAs are a global music awards show that takes place this year in Glasgow on November 9.

Assaf will be competing against international artists from across the globe — B.A.P from Japan and One Direction from North Europe amongst others. Previous winners include Chris Lee (2013), Han Geng (2012) and BIGBANG (2011).

It’s all down to a public vote on mtvema.com, open until November 9, at 2.59am UAE time.

Nicki Minaj hosts and performs at the awards, which will include performances by Enrique Iglesias, Calvin Harris, Charli XCX, Kiesza, Royal Blood, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran. British rock legend Ozzy Osbourne will also be present in Glasgow to accept the Global Icon Award.

The show airs in the UAE on Monday, November 10 at 1am, where the winner of the Worldwide Act category will be announced.
