Shahid Kapoor, who plays Hamlet in the upcoming Bollywood version of the play, Haider, isn’t a fan of Shakespeare.

He claims he didn’t enjoy watching the tragedy while young, but is convinced that director Vishal Bharadwaj’s film will reform those like him.

“It’s a revenge family drama and there’s a strong dynamic of family and relationships. There’s an edginess and complexity to my role,” said Kapoor at a press conference in Dubai on Tuesday afternoon.

He was accompanied by actress Shraddha Kapoor, who plays Ophelia. In the modern-day adaptation, she plays a journalist in Kashmir who falls in love with his character, Haider.

While the pair was game to answer any question, they didn’t look too pleased when asked why a Bollywood fan should choose Haider over Hrithik Roshan’s action-thriller Bang Bang. Both release next Thursday on October 2.

“That’s why we make promos, which show content. Then, you are making an informed choice. Trailers are like sampling a product before you buy it. It’s like how you go to an ice-cream parlour and taste the flavours,” said Kapoor.
