Sharjah: Afghanistan cricket team which qualified for the 2015 World Cup has been included in the Asia Cup, scheduled to be held in Bangladesh in February-March.
The executive board of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), at its meeting in Colombo, has decided to invite Afghanistan to participate in the Asia Cup 2014 who will now join Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan will be participating in a major One Day International tournament for the first time which will give them an opportunity to get the experience of competing in a major tournament ahead of their ICC WT20 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 participation.
The board also accepted the bid for broadcast and grounds rights from STAR India Pvt Ltd for the Asia Cup 2014. A total of 11 matches will be played with the opening game, scheduled for February 25 with the final due on March 7.
The ACC also said violence-plagued Bangladesh would remain the venue for next month’s event. “The tournament will go ahead as scheduled in Dhaka from February 25 to March 7,” ACC chief executive Ashraful Haq told the media.
