Bollywood stars aren’t limiting themselves to acting and turning heads on the red carpets. Now the ones who know their Hermes from their H& M are taking matters into their own hands and turning into edgy fashion designers.

Gulf News tabloid! takes a look at the stars who are taking their fashion game seriously and are channelling their personal style into their creations. Here’s a round up of the stars who have aced that game ...

Label: Skult by Shahid Kapoor

The star behind it: Shahid Kapoor

His fashion philosophy: Dressing down is cooler than dressing up. Always choose functionality and practicality.

What will you find in their collections: Hoodies, denims, bomber jackets and jogger pants (abof.com/skult)

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “When I started designing this collection, athleisure was becoming a huge trend internationally, with guys like Kanye sporting it. Dressing down was becoming cooler than dressing up. I wanted to take that idea forward,” said Kapoor in an interview with men’s fashion magazine, GQ.

Label: Rheson

The stars behind it: Sonam Kapoor and Rhea Kapoor

Their fashion philosophy: High street fashion can be affordable (their clothes and non-leather, animal-friendly bags start at Dh120)

What will you find in their collections: Quirky prints, palazzo saris and collared dresses with sleeves. Also, check out their flap over backpacks and bucket bags.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “We wanted to work on something that is owned by us and had our personal touch on every level. The key to the birth of Rheson was to give girls a platform wherein they do not have to spend money to look stylish … It’s like accessible, affordable glamour. We did not wish to create a couture brand. Our forte lies in the fact that our clothes should become your best friends,” said Kapoor in a statement.

Label: All About You in association with Myntra

The star behind it: Deepika Padukone

Her fashion philosophy: Padukone gravitates towards clothes that are “comfortable, romantic, feminine and fun” and her collection is a reflection of that.

What will you find in her collections: Maxis, cotton tunics, off-shoulder tops, bell-bottomed jeans and floral tops.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “For me, fashion means a sense of accessibility and coziness that can be seen in my designs. These clothes are the extension of my personality, of a multitasking woman who is in the age group of 18-35,” said Padukone in an interview with India Today, an Indian news magazine.

Label: capsule collection for Jabong by Alia Bhatt

The star behind it: Alia Bhatt.

Her fashion philosophy: Keep it simple.

What will you find in her collections: Heavily influenced by Karan Johar and designer Manish Malhotra who worked with her in her first film, Student Of The Year, Bhatt has channelled her inner style diva and has designed clothes that are effortlessly chic.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “The collection is very simple, it’s very me … It is very personal and special for me. I want everybody to enjoy this. A lot of importance has been given to animal prints as I love animals,” said Bhatt.

Label: Weirdass

The star behind it: Vir Das

His fashion philosophy: T-shirts are cool again.

What will you find in his collection: Quirky one-liners and caustic slogan emblazoned on his trendy T-shirts.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “I’ve worn funny T-shirts all my life and always thought that a person’s underwear could be witty and sexy at the same time. The line brings out the witty side in both men and women,” said Das in an interview with Times of India, an Indian daily, as he made his fashion debut at the 2015 Lakme Fashion Week.

Label: Turquoise & Gold.

The star behind it: Malaika Arora Khan.

Her fashion philosophy: It’s not about your size, but how you style it.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “I’ve used all the tips I picked up during my modelling years, from my nieces and from other fashion portals … I’m always associated with fashion that’s sexy or glamorous, and I wanted to move away from that image entirely. We kept every shape and size in mind when designing the clothing range, rather than making clothes for models and alienating everybody else.”

Label: #Unleashyourwildside limited-edition campaign

Sussanne Khan, Bipasha Basu and Malaika Arora Khan.

The stars behind it: Malaika Arora Khan, Sussanne Khan and Bipasha Basu, the three style editors of the fashion portal thelabellife.com, joined hands to create a collection called Unleash Your Wild Side along with an ice cream brand.

Their fashion philosophy: Let your creativity flow with animal prints and use plenty of fierce fabrics.

What will you find in the collection: Leopard printed pants, animal print scarfs, leopard-pointed brogues, matt-gold accessories and giant totes on thelabellife.com.

Straight from the fashion horses’ mouths: “I am naturally drawn towards dark, indulgent hues and aristocratic style — so the Magnum campaign easily resonated with me. You can say, Malaika, Bipasha and I truly unleashed a part of ourselves around the mood, textures and silhouettes of the collection,” said Khan on the website.

Basu added: “Far from being literal, this collection consists of spirited shoes, head-turning accessories, wear-everywhere tailored pieces in raw and earthy cocoa hues of course our signature shine.”

Label: SSK Saris in collaboration with online portal homeshop18

The star behind it: Shilpa Shetty.

Her fashion philosophy: Saris have a timeless, classy appeal.

What will you find in her collection: Free flowing fabrics such as crepes and elegant designs.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “The sari is one of the most popular and versatile outfits, which makes you look glamorous and dignified at the same time … The SSK collection has been designed keeping in mind an Indian ethos with a modern twist.”

Label: HRX

The star behind it: Hrithik Roshan

His fashion philosophy: Be the best version of yourself and turn on your fashion game at the gym.

What will you find in his collection: Sports gear and active lifestyle apparel in bright colours and trendy silhouettes.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth:

“I always envisioned HRX to be a platform that could inspire people to bring out their best and to never give up,” said Roshan in a statement during its launch in 2013. The actor also wore his own sports wear designs in his recent film, Kaabil.

Label: Being Human stocked locally in Splash

The star behind it: Salman Khan

His fashion philosophy: Wearing a Being Human T-shirt isn’t just about looking good, but about doing good too.

What will you find in his collection: Trendy casual wear for men dominated by colourful T-shirts.

Straight from the fashion horse’s mouth: “The concept of Being Human came to me from my parents, who have always been active in charity. But the flip side to charity is that you are not sure that the money you are giving is going to the right person. My parents and even I have been conned several times, and that hurts. I decided to channelise giving. I have made sure that I don’t give to individuals. I only give to institutions, which give me complete accountability of where my money is being spent,” said Khan about his own charity foundation in an interview with an Indian business daily.
