Dubai: If you have noticed some changes to your WhatsApp in recent weeks, you are not alone. On April 9, the world’s largest messaging platform confirmed several new updates designed to enhance chats, calls and channels.

These changes aim to improve the way users connect, share and stay informed across the app. With features being added regularly, it is easy to overlook some of the tools that can make using WhatsApp better. To help you stay updated, here is a look at the most recent changes now available.

'Online' indicator in group chats - In group chats, users will now see a real-time count of how many members are online. This indicator appears just below the group name, offering a quick view of who is currently active and available.

Highlight notifications in groups - Notification controls have also been improved with the introduction of a new ‘Notify for’ setting. This allows users to limit alerts to ‘Highlights’, such as @mentions, replies, and messages from saved contacts or receive all notifications, depending on personal preference.

Event updates - Event planning within WhatsApp has received a boost. While users could previously create events in group chats, the new update now supports event creation in one-on-one conversations. Additional features include the ability to RSVP as ‘maybe’, invite a plus-one, set an end date and time for longer events, and pin the event within a chat for easy reference.

Document scanning on iPhone - For iPhone users, a document scanning function has been introduced. By selecting ‘Scan document’ from the attachment menu, users can now scan, crop and save documents directly through the app.

Set WhatsApp as the default app on iPhone - Another iOS enhancement allows users to set WhatsApp as their default messaging and calling app. This can be activated by going to the iPhone’s settings, navigating to ‘Default Apps’ and selecting WhatsApp.

WhatsApp has also introduced several updates to its calling features. A new, dedicated tab makes it easier to initiate calls, share call links and view call history in one convenient location.

Pinch to zoom in video calls - iPhone users can now pinch to zoom during video calls, allowing them to get a closer look at their own or another person’s video feed.

Add to call from a chat - Additionally, users can add someone to an ongoing one-on-one call directly from a chat by tapping the call icon and selecting ‘Add to call’.

Enhanced video call quality - WhatsApp has upgraded its infrastructure to provide more reliable and higher-quality video calls. Improved routing reduces the risk of dropped connections or frozen screens, while enhanced bandwidth detection enables automatic upgrades to HD quality where possible.

The Channels tab, which houses both Status updates and Channels separately from private chats, has gained new tools as well.

Video notes for channels -  Channel administrators can now record and share short video messages of up to 60 seconds with their followers, similar to the video notes feature already available in personal chats.

Voice message transcripts - If you are unable to listen to a voice message from a channel, WhatsApp now provides a text transcript so you can catch up without audio.

Channel admins can also generate a QR code that links directly to their channel. This makes it easier for users to promote their content and reach more followers with just a scan.
