ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IS THE SMART CHOICE: We are enjoying easy access to services, seamless workflows and security in our community thanks in large part to the UAE’s prudent and timely deployment of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions. The country stands out in dedicating an entire ministry and national strategy to AI. From police patrol AI-powered cameras that can identify individuals using biometrics to AI chatbots that handle customer enquiries, AI solutions are commonplace in the UAE. A recent event in Sharjah, the Sheraa AI Forum, served as an inspiration and recognition to this cutting-edge technology in making our lives simpler and safer. PAKISTAN NEEDS GENEROUS SUPPORT: Pakistan needs massive financial support to recover from the devastating floods blamed on climate change. The country’s estimated flood loss is now put at $30 billion. Antonio Guterres has toured parts of the affected areas and issued a global appeal: “I urge countries to generously support the humanitarian response, recovery and reconstruction as a matter of solidarity and justice.” Over 1,400 people have died in flooding that covers a third of the country wiping out crops and destroying homes, businesses, roads and bridges. Some 33 million have been affected. UN chief’s visit will help draw the world’s attention to the gravity of the situation. It’s time that developed countries provided Pakistan with further financial resources for its relief and recovery efforts. [COMMENT BY: Stephen N.R., Senior Associate Editor]

JABEUR AIMS TO BECOME FIRST WOMAN FROM AFRICA TO SECURE MAJOR SINGLES TITLE: Tunisian Ons Jabeur will be seeking her first major in the US Open final when she faces world number one Iga Swiatek later tonight. Fifth seed Jabeur made it to the final of Wimbledon in July but lost to her best friend Elena Rybakina. If she wins in New York she will become the first woman from Africa to secure a major singles title. The two are the form players on the WTA Tour this year, with Poland’s Swiatek winning 50 matches and Jabeur 38. Swiatek has the edge as she not only has won her last nine finals in straight sets but she also beat Jabeur when they last met in the Italian Open final in May. It is all set to be a fascinating battle between the two. [COMMENT BY: Imran Malik, Assistant Sports Editor]

RESPECT PEOPLE'S PERSONAL SPACE: Hrithik Roshan is the latest celebrity to be accosted by a fan for a selfie, all while he was with his two kids. It’s not uncommon for Bollywood and Hollywood stars to be followed around my paparazzi and fans but there’s a limit to how much access people think they should have to them. It’s not fair to encroach on their personal space, especially when they are on their personal time. Fans should know when to leave them alone and when it’s appropriate to ask for a picture with them.
