PROTECTING DOMESTIC WORKERS: The UAE Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation’s (MoHRE) call to licensed domestic worker recruitment agencies is a commendable step to ensure the fair treatment and protection of domestic workers. The emphasis on adherence to UAE’s laws is crucial, as it also provides a framework for fair employment relations. The agency has reiterated its commitment to fostering dialogue and collaboration between all parties— a sign of cooperation. The Ministry’s determination to penalise non-compliant agencies sends a strong message that violations will not be tolerated. The Ministry’s call to the public to avoid illegal agencies and unreliable social media platforms is an advisory to make ethical choices when hiring domestic workers. INDIA MUST MOVE FAST ON WOMEN’S RESERVATION BILL: A bill reserving a third of seats for women in India’s Lok Sabha and state assemblies has received widespread support from across the political spectrum. It’s been a long time coming and has taken many hours of debate in and outside parliament. It will now need the approval of both houses of parliament and a majority of state legislatures to be passed. There are other hurdles to be crossed before it is implemented. But the first step has been taken and this is commendable. Now the political and bureaucratic machinery must move fast to make it a reality. (By Alex Abraham, Senior Associate Editor)

ALL EYES ON FED: The US Federal Reserve is poised to maintain its benchmark lending rate while seeking more data on the impact of previous rate hikes. Having raised rates to a 22-year high in July, the Fed will release updated economic projections indicating stronger growth and lower unemployment. While many officials favour holding rates steady, some suggest a potential hike after September. Fed Chair Jerome Powell may highlight persistently high inflation, leaving room for further increases, possibly in November. Inflation and job market moderation give the Fed confidence in pausing rate hikes. Despite differing views, the central bank faces uncertainties in curbing inflation while preventing the economy from slipping into recession. (By Nivetha Dayanand, Web Editor)

‘OPPENHEIMER’S’ $900M-PLUS HAUL IS A GREAT SIGN: A three-hour movie discussing nuclear physics may not seem like blockbuster material, but director Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ has exploded established industry conventions, earning over $900 million (Dh3.4 billion) at the global box office. Its stupendous success — ranking as the third biggest film of the year behind ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros’ — proves that good and meaningful content prevails. It’s gratifying to note that this film has reached younger audiences and teenagers, who are often criticised for having a limited attention span. The biopic demonstrates that if the subject is engaging, no force in the world can prevent it from becoming a cultural juggernaut. Moreover, considering Hollywood is still grappling with a writers’ strike, this movie’s success deserves even greater celebration. (By Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Entertainment Editor)

SPORTS AND GAMBLING NEVER MIX: Online betting has been a scourge of sports. Betting is not a sport; it’s gambling. True fans don’t gamble. American golfer Phil Mickelson has spoken about how gambling has ruined his personal life. After losing nearly $100 million, he’s given up his addiction to focus more on his family. Sports authorities should continue to beef up measures against betting sites, and sports stars should set an example by avoiding gambling. (By A.K.S. Satish, Sports Editor)
