NO ESCAPE FROM HEAT: Heat makes flying airplanes much more difficult! Because, hot air is less dense than cold air, its molecules zipping around at higher speeds, meaning planes have less lift when the temperature rises. That makes it harder for them to take off and stay aloft. Airlines often choose to delay flights or unload passengers and luggage to shed weight from planes when the temperature climbs too high, leading to cascading schedule disruptions, along with passengers occasionally being trapped for hours on runways inside roasting aircraft. So if you are planning to take a trip in summer heat, be aware. The era of global boiling is here! There’s no escape. (Comment by: Stephen N.R., Senior Associate Editor)

US ECONOMIC WOES: The United States faced a credit rating downgrade by Fitch Ratings, slipping from AAA to AA+. The downgrade was attributed to mounting fiscal deficits, unresolved medium-term challenges related to rising entitlement costs, and an erosion of governance. Despite Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's response, the decision has raised concerns. Fitch forecasts the debt burden to reach 118 per cent of GDP by 2025, significantly higher than the AAA median. While yields on two-year Treasuries fell, the market's reaction is uncertain, as this downgrade could prompt risk-off moves and safe-haven buying of US Treasuries and the dollar. END IN SIGHT TO HOLLYWOOD IMPASSE? The first signs of a possible thaw between the striking writers and studios in Hollywood came when leaders representing writers’ unions said they plan to meet with representatives from studios. Although it is early to say these could lead to a solution, the fact that the two sides have decided to sit down and talk is a positive sign indeed. It remains to be seen if the studios and writers can agree over contentious issues. (Comment by: Rajagopalan Venkataraman, Assistant Editor-Features)

FOOTBALL TRANSFERS FOCUS SHIFTS TO SAUDI PRO LEAGUE: Sadio Mane became the latest high-profile player to join the Saudi Pro League at Al Nassr from Bayern Munich. The Senegal superstar will join Portugal football legend Cristiano Ronaldo at the club. The recent summer transfers has seen players such as Ruben Neves, Karim Benzema, Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson sign up for Saudi Pro League clubs. Though the transfer deadline in Europe top leagues closes on September 1, Saudi Arabia's runs until September 20. This means we can expect more high-profile signings. Looks like Saudi Arabia will hog all the limelight this season. (Comment by Jai Prasad Rai, Assistant Editor)
