Argentina announces lockdown as pandemic rages: With Argentina’s second COVID-19 wave breaking records over the last week in terms of new infections and deaths, President Alberto Fernandez (pictured) announced the country will tighten pandemic lockdown measures. The strict measures will begin tomorrow until May 31 where schools and non-essential businesses will close and social, religious and sporting events will be banned. The country posted 35,884 new COVID-19 cases yesterday after hitting a record high 39,652 on Wednesday. Under 5 per cent of the 45 million population has been fully vaccinated. "We are living the worst moment since the pandemic began," Fernandez said. "Today as never before we must all take care of ourselves to avoid all the losses that we can."
