PROMPT RESPONSE TO EMERGENCIES: The rescue of a 24-year-old man, who was injured in the Al Madam desert region by the National Search and Rescue Centre and Sharjah Police yesterday once again demonstrates the capability and promptness of the authorities to deal with such emergencies in hostile terrain. While this was a desert incident, the response to even situations in the mountainous areas is immediate. Regular awareness campaigns are also conducted to urge the public to avoid potential dangers and we would do well to keep them in mind when we venture out. [COMMENT BY: Sharmila Dhal, UAE Editor]

ENGLAND LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS IN REAL STYLE AT T20 WORLD CUP: Before the T20 World Cup had started England were the much fancied favourites. The 50-over World Cup champions are currently ranked as the best T20 team and they are showing their class having won all three of their Super-12 matches with their biggest result coming last night. They totally outclassed Australia and had them down to 21-4 at one stage before bowling them out for 125 before going on to seal an eight-wicket win to almost guarantee a spot in the semifinals. The star of the match was batsman Jos Buttler who hit a fabulous 71 not out in just 32 balls as England reached the target in just 11.4 overs. If Eoin Morgan’s men continue to play like this then it will take a truly special effort from someone to stop them from going all the way and winning the coveted trophy. A TEARFUL GOODBYE TO A CINEMATIC ICON: There wasn’t a dry eye for miles as cinematic icon Puneeth Rajkumar was cremated earlier today with state honours for his contribution to the world of entertainment. The late Kannada actor, who died following a cardiac arrest last week at the age of 46, has left behind a brief, but powerful legacy that earned him accolades and acclaim, along with monikers such as Appu and the Power Star. Rajkumar’s sudden death continues to echo across India, with Bollywood stalwarts also paying tribute to the icon. While many mourn his passing, his memories live on in films such as ‘Appu’, ‘Hudugaru’ and ‘Anjani Putra’. [COMMENT BY: Bindu Rai, Entertainment Editor]
