FEDERER RULES HIMSELF OUT OF WIMBLEDON, AUSTRALIAN OPEN: It appears unlikely that 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer will play at Wimbledon next year whilst also confirming he will miss the Australian Open as he continues to recover from injury. He has not played a competitive match since being beaten in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in July and then having more surgery on his troublesome knee. The 2022 Wimbledon Championships begin on 27 June but the Swiss star has admitted that he may not be back in action until next summer. “I would be extremely surprised if I could play Wimbledon. I will be able to resume running quietly in January and resume sessions on the court with complex support in March or April. I therefore estimate my return to competition in the summer of 2022.” 40-year-old Federer says he must make a full recovery so that he can say goodbye to the sport – that he has graced for so many years – on a tennis court.
