PROTECTING THE WONDER OF NATURE: The giant sequoia trees in California's Yosemite National Park are a wonder of nature. They have lived about 3,000 years and grow around 300 feet in height. But now they are facing the danger of wildfires. Thanks to efforts to regularly burn the undergrowth beneath these trees, they have just survived a major fire. Small, intentionally lit fires over the past 50 years stopped the fire in its tracks and prevented the flames from doing much harm. While officials are taking all efforts to protect them, we must continue to play our part in the places where we are to safeguard the environment. Small steps will go a long way in protecting nature. GERMANY RELIEVED TO AVOID ENGLAND IN EURO 2022 QUARTERS: Germany are into the quarter-finals of the Women’s European Football Championships after they beat pre-tournament favourites Spain 2-0. The eight-time winners have secured the top spot in Group B and will now avoid a Euro 2022 last-eight clash against hosts England. Spain will play Denmark next and the winners will finish second in the group which will mean a tie against the Lionesses and neither will fancy that. Why? Because England’s last result was a record 8-0 thrashing of Norway. No wonder Germany are breathing a sigh of relief to have avoided them. (By Imran Malik, Assistant Sports Editor)

‘SQUID GAME’ MAKES EMMY HISTORY: ‘Squid Game’ has earned its rightful place in history with the dystopian Netflix thriller earning 14 Emmy nods for its first season, and becoming the first non-English-language drama series shortlisted for glory on television’s biggest night. HBO’s ‘Succession’ topped with 25 nods, while ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘The White Lotus’ earned 20 nods each. HBO’s ‘Hacks’ and Hulu’s ‘Only Murders in the Building’ racked up 17 nominations each. Amid the celebrations, there are fans who are upset that NBC drama ‘This Is Us’ will head into that long good night without ever having won the Emmy for outstanding drama series. Such is the luck of the draw. (By Bindu Rai, Entertainment Editor)
