Dedicate parking for motorcycles: Abu Dhabi has announced more than 3,000 parking spaces for motorcycles, becoming the first city in the UAE to offer dedicated parking spots for bikers. It is a great move because the UAE has seen massive increase in number of motorcycles on the roads over last few years, thanks to the food delivery trend across the country. Random parking by motorcyclists have become a nuisance as they often block car parking spaces and footpaths. Dedicated parking spaces for motorcyclists should be developed in all the emirates keeping in view increasing number of two-wheelers. This will not only help bikers park their motorcycles in an orderly manner but also improve the aesthetic look of the city. [COMMENT BY: Ashfaq Ahmed, Senior Assistant Editor]

Desperate times in Lebanon: Seven bank branches, including five on Friday, were stormed in the past week by depositors seeking to unlock frozen savings. The bank break-ins that have garnered wide public support prompted banks to announce a three-day closure. This is another sign of growing chaos in the country amid a historic economic meltdown which led to banks imposing draconian restrictions on withdrawals. Banks have been widely accused of operating like a cartel and of spiriting large amounts out of the country for senior Lebanese officials. Also on Friday, parliament suspended talks on the 2022 budget after a walk-out by lawmakers sent attendance below quorum, further delaying efforts to complete requirements to access IMF funds to relieve its economic crisis. The unfortunate developments could further destabilise Lebanon and its crumbling institutions, as the economic crisis drags on, with no end in sight.[COMMENT BY: Stephen N.R., Senior Associate Editor]

Another theatre casualty: Broadway’s longest-running show ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ will close its curtains next year after taking a hit at the box office ever since it reopened after the pandemic. It’s one more casualty in the entertainment industry, which is still recuperating after the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. While it’s a sad moment for such an iconic show to end its run, it’s a chance to reevaluate what audiences want to see, and to innovate something new. The industry must change in order to recover its losses and sustain itself in a world that is still dealing with crisis after crisis. [COMMENT BY: Jennifer Barretto, Assistant Editor - Features]

Former England captain Beckham queues for 12 hours to see Queen lying in state: David Beckham queued for 12 hours to pay his respects to Queen Elizabeth II lying in state at Westminster Hall. The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star was among thousands who waited patiently along the River Thames on Friday to pay their respects. The 47-year-old former England captain – who was presented with an OBE by the Queen in 2003 for his services to football – was clearly emotional as he walked past the coffin and was seen wiping tears away. “It's a sad day, but it's a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she's left,” said Beckham who is known to be a huge fan of the Royal Family.
