FOR UAE INVESTORS, A CHANCE FOR GAINS TOO, BUT PLAY IT SMART: For UAE expats with plans to send remittances or make some investments, the coming two days will require a bit of deft management. Dollar’s on the way up again, and that opens up remittance gains for a swathe of currencies. Will these gains be sizeable? This is where timing could come in handy, as most signs suggest a bit of uncertainty for most currencies after the US Fed delivers another rate hike blast to tame the inflation menace. For stock market investors in the UAE, keep looking beyond the horizon. Handy dividends are coming their way, with the satellite company Yahsat the latest to announce an interim pay. And then there’s the likelihood of Emaar’s capital increase. Let’s not forget Salik’s over subscription numbers too. Investors, hang tight. (By Manoj Nair, Business Editor)

TAKE THE FLU VACCINE, PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE: The time to take the annual flu vaccine is here. As the UAE health authorities kick off their nationwide awareness campaign next week, residents would do well to pay heed and go in for the flu vaccination. This applies particularly to young children, the elderly, pregnant women and those with chronic diseases. Why take chances? Remember, it is always better to be safe than sorry. HALES LEADS ENGLAND TO HISTORIC WIN AGAINST PAKISTAN: England beat Pakistan last night by six wickets in what was their first match in the country for 17 years. Chasing 159 to win in the T20 clash, it was the returning Alex Hales who guided the team to victory with a solid 53. He smashed seven fours in his first appearance since 2019 when he was dropped from the World Cup squad. His half century gave the tourists a platform to build on in Karachi and with Harry Brook making 42 not out England won with four balls to spare. Pakistan had posted 158-7 with star man Mohammad Rizwan getting 68 while captain Babar Azam got 31 – a huge improvement over his poor recent outings in the Asia Cup. There was a minute’s silence for flood victims in Pakistan and Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II before the start of play at the National Stadium while the second game in the seven-match series will take place tomorrow at the same venue. STAR-STUDDED MOVIE PREMIERES ARE BACK IN DUBAI: Indian actor Dulquer Salmaan, who has successfully stepped out of the shadows of his legendary actor-dad Mammootty, was welcomed with drumrolls and catcalls from frenzied fans yesterday at the Vox Cinemas in Deira City Centre. He was given a rock star welcome as he led the world’s first screening of his upcoming thriller ‘Chup’ along with the film’s National Award-winning director R Balki, and co-star Shreya Dhanwanthary. The terrific trio was on a mission to showcase their film not just to the local press, but to all those movie-mad Indians who adore good and sensible cinema. Their logic was simple: A film shouldn’t be viewed just by critics alone, but by anyone who loves a good story. Dulquer Salmaan even reminded his fans that feedback – good, bad, or ugly – is always welcome indicating that here is a team who is confident about their film. Here’s hoping that more filmmakers are game to have screening for the public and not just critics alone. (By Manjusha Radhakrishnan, Assistant Editor Features)
