YEMEN TRUCE MUST BE EXTENDED: There has been considerable calm in Yemen since the UN-brokered ceasefire took effect in April and has twice been renewed. It has reduced casualties by 60 per cent, humanitarian groups say, which is a good report. Yemenis hope the truce, which is due to expire on October 2, will be extended amid fears any fresh fighting would wipe out the small gains they have made. Yemen’s war between Iran-backed Houthi militia and a Saudi-led Arab coalition has created what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. Talks to strike a lasting peace deal remain at a standstill. On the Houthi side, there is no serious will to negotiate. At least, the world powers must join the UN efforts to extend the truce and lessen the suffering of the poor Yemenis. (COMMENT BY: N.R. STEPHEN SENIOR ASSOCIATE EDITOR)
